Annapurna studios - Film Institute
I have been to the annapurna studios to take a course in what is called as scripting lab;
Its a 4 week course running only on saturday and sunday; need to pay 15000 to get enrolled... this was the first batch that is starting from november on the script writing that also in hyderabad.
Was confused whether to join or not.. bought the application..need to check still... usually what would a person see before joining for creative classes is the question that got to my mind...
If there were tutors who would enhance the creativity everybody would have joined the same. If the tutors are going to say how to present the creativity; then why there is a 2% success ratio in Telugu film industry. Do the people who are the so called faculty are competent enough to guide the newbies in this field. These questions did not motivate me to join.
But if there is a good library of books and videos, i thought half of my money is safe; The administrative guy told they are still building the campus and permanent faculty is still not available and they are going to get them. He even told that if they were not able to get the faculty the CEO would take the classes. but having a library or the type of books in that library is still to be checked. It was told that we would get an invitation to any film functions being organized. These things again are motivating me to join.
I shall keep posted on the things if i am going to join the course or not, shall have to check what the people have to say in the script writing. First batch of directors are out from that institute and finding their time hard in cracking their first chance.

Aksharasadan - An orphanage Tenants
After a long hiccups, we have finally settled in the new home. All the furniture that was custom designed in the old house along with bath tubs have to be made vacant for tenants to use it.
What can be a more reason to smile than knowing that these luxuries are now used by orphans and Semi-orphans. Yes we have leased our home to an orphanage registered NGO body called aksharasadan; i was touched by the gesture they had while they watched the house. Small kids not more than 12 years of age were running around the house showing one after the other to their friends. Few kids parents were having AIDS and they knew they are not going to stay long. They were so happy for their kids to know that their kids will be using some of the luxuries which they did not use.
My heart smelt a feel of gratitude when the person who was running the orphanage sighed to me asking to see the happy feeling in the children.
We have asked them to grow faster and we can help in what ever way we could...
Though the hands would always be tight when it comes to donating, i felt as if we have donated something more happier for the people.
I knew that they would spoil some of them, but who doesnt. Thought as if some good things need to be experienced on the cost of some money. so never mind if they spoilt some but happiness is one i have given to them and they in turn gave me a satisfaction that can last a life time.

Black Day in cultural history
Its a black day in AP with the fall of statues; It remembered me of the dialogue from Shankardada Zindabad; what will you do if a kid throws a stone at Gandhi; Gandhi answers give him 10 stones and show him where all the other statues are and let him destory all of them.
The activists probably got 10 stones to throw; its pathetic that rather than increasing knowledge and working towards progress activists are throwing stones at the people who have shown some progress.
This remembered me of a simple example;
There was a boss in the company who used to come to office sleep and snor the whole day; when he used to get up from the sleep he used to find 1 or 2 hardworking people staying in the office and working in the night. He used to imagine that these people were sleeping the whole day and started working now; he shouted at them and told to getout from the office as they were sleeping the whole day and with frustration they quit the job.
Now boss is happy because he do not find any body working in the office, still he gets his money as there are other bosses who are working for the company or organisation. When it was time for increments he shouted on all the other bosses and demanded that he should get increment because he was in the office from morning 9:00 am to night 9:00 pm or else he will commit suicide and its all his employees and team wish that he should get the increment because if he gets increment his team will get increment.
Dont know what else to say... everybody stays calm for their own welfare..so as the saying goes.. Silence is gold..
Great job guys.. india can only progress if we do not have statues.. please also take out the statues that are in the middle of the road so that atleast you would clear some traffic congestions

Thank you 2010 ; Welcome 2011
aspirations are high; sweat precipitation is high; though its spine chilling winter....
life is above the sky; feet is grounded
everytime some good and some bad take their way to get to another new year
Feel fresh; another destination is about to show up on the journey from tomorrow.
Happy New Year; whole world celebrates the happiness except few like me who get that lucky chance to sleep in 2010 and wake up in 2011 fresh and rejuvinated

Script Writing message
Message:
Hi Pradeep,
It is really nice that you are giving wonderful piece of information and suggestions on script writing, Thanks for that first of all.
I am XXXXX working as Software professional in Bangalore.
Even I am interested in script writing but not started writing anything as of now.
I have some questions which might be because of inexperience in life or in script writing.
1. Is formal training needed for script writing.
2. Telugu University provides distance education course on script writing, do you thing that helps in any way.
3. I think, lot of reading should be involved in writing to get the command on the language and craft, so what are the books that you
suggest for language and script writing craft.
These might be first set of questions and will come back with many more( I think, you don't mind)
Thanks Again for educating lot of enthusiastic people like me and hoping for better relationship in future.
-----------------
Formal training is advantageous but not mandatory; what ever may be the trainings that are taken; if you have the creativity to write it out you are in game. Formal training gives you an idea of how to present your idea, it will not generate an idea. Training will make you more serious towards writing. Remember finally its you who will write and no trainer will come handy at that time. If you find the right place; it is true that you can team up with like minded people and start your writing work.
----
I do not know what telugu university provides; its better just walk in and find out what they promise before enrolling for a course
---
yes lot of reading is required; read what ever is handy; it is good if you summarize and write the story of the books you read in your own words. Ramayan and Mahabharat are the 2 master pieces I recommend to read before starting on anything; not like epics; but understanding the underlying concept or thread that drives the story forward.

How much do i get paid if writing scripts?
For the people who want to take script writing more as profession, the first question asked is how much would i get paid if i write a script/screenplay/treatment.
Based on the thing that is being written and the experience you have in the field, the cost gets varied.
It also depends on the production houses you are working for, so do not consider these amounts as the bench mark but these are only some kind of expectations that are set by our seniors working.
Full 2 or 2.5 hour movie - 1-2 years experienced - 100000 INR ; 2-5 year experienced - 350000 INR: more than 5 years - 15 ,00,000 INR
for half an hour television screenplay - 30,000 INR
for 30 min to 1 hour short films - 50000 INR
For people looking this option as career; you have to also make sure that till you get your first break; its very difficult. Experience is only counted on the number of films worked and not on the time from which you completed your first project.

Great Script - Mahabharat
Till now i was of the feeling that all pandavas are heros and all kauravas are villains in mahabharat.. recently after giving it a complete reading mahabharat is a script where there is no hero.. all are villains working for their own good...
All the bad things that are happenning in todays world are very well described and depicted in the script its not because they had the foresight or something but because they actually happenned at that time.
The interesting thing that i came to know after the reading which the author said in a very subtle note is "you are not reading this scripture to know who is hero or who is villain, or to decide which character is good and which character is bad...the characters are so well intervowen into one another that any action that is happenning today is only because of some past action that was committed whether knowingly or unknowingly"
Mahabharat is not a scripture that says bad will win over good, its a scripture that says you need to understand yourself first and win your senses in order to win the happiness and pleasure.
Great epic... though slowly realized... its a must read for every aspiring writer to understand how the characters are linked with one another...

Dear pradeep,
Though I joined as a member in Movie writers and registered I am unable to open the files. That is not a problem to be worried but I want to get in touch with you and seek advice. I am a 75 year old man and do not aspire to achieve much anyway because my life is just like a candle a major part of which is burnt out.
To get to the point: I saw the movie recently 'pelli chesi choodu' the old film of 1952 genre. I am quite impressed by the movie again same like when I saw the same nearly 60 years ago. By now three generations passed and there is sea change in the culture outlook of telugu society. So I get a flash to remake the film as a sequel and I developed a story line. The aim is to entertain senior citizens which population is increasing by leaps and bounds.
However, I do not want to undergo the hassle of going round to get the process on as neither have I energy nor the required resources. Before presenting the story line to any entreprenur, I want your advice of how to preserve my sanity simply because I do not want somebody to take advantage of my story. Not that I lose anything by that, but it hurts.
Will you please spare a few moments to get in touch with me through e-mail correspondence? Please do.
sincerely,

My dear Mr.Pradeep,
I always admire the present youth for being so much advanced in dignified manners compared to my genration peers such as responding to mails quick and apt. Not that we were bad people, but the systems of communications were a drag. Your advice is welcome and I may take some more time to do the needful.
I do not want to become a screenplay writer. However, I am curious to know how the screen play work sheets look like. Can you mail me as an attachment a few pages of such a thing for any telugu feature film?
That gives me an idea how a movie script is designed.
Please let me know whether you would be interested to know my storyline in a synopsis form. That would facilitate my effort if you can offer any suggestions in the line of thinking. So far my stroy is about 100 pages in Gautami font 16.
Thanks for keeping in touch, and wish you all the best.

Hi sir,
I do not have any telugu one, i usually refer to the english scripts. you can find the list of scripts at http://www.imsdb.com.
you can take a look at story, synopsis and screenplay here for any movie that you liked.
The worksheets there is a software called as final draft which has these inbuilt; so we often use that for developing any kind of scripts.
The basic idea to develop the story to script; make sure you differentiate scenes with respect to the location and the surrounding mood.

prasthanam vs Leader
Prasthanam and Leader, 2 political sagas are hitting the theatres almost at the same time. Both are about youth coming to politics, so what could be the difference between the two.
In the initial round, leader has crossed prasthanam in the music department; Leader audio has visible shades of Happy days, Shekhar kammula movie will not miss few scenes which we can count as redundant;
1. Heroine running with hero
2. Heroine jumping with hair open
3. Heroine/Hero dancing with children
It was a new trend for the initial movies but, with many other directors following shekhar ji, if the movie is not moving at a rapid pace, very soon the subject gets boring. My initial review/forecast for Leader is Godavari + Neti Bharatham(vijay shanthi) + Guru = Leader
Coming to prasthanam, its a vijayawada leader (congress) story, so it could be having some surprise element packed in it; Though prasthanam songs were not so good for hearing; assuming vennela picturisation it can leave an impact. (vennela songs were also not well recieved before the release), powerful narration from Dev ji can overtake a bit; My inital review/forecast for Prasthanam is
Anna(rajashekhar) + Political Rowdy (Mohanbabu) +Sarkar = Prasthanam
Though 2 stories are youth coming to politics, their treatment is completely different. So the main thing when the story lines are the same and treatment is different, the movie that releases first will take the credit with it.
So now the releasing date plays an important role, 11th is Leader and Prasthanam is coming after that, so unless leader is badly told, its hard for prasthanam to get a break.

javed sir on script writing
Star Screen Awards, Javed Sir telling about the importance of the script and script writing in bollywood. Its his highness that after receiving the life time achievment award he was speaking about the scripts to be written for the films of our generation.
though every body knows the importance of script and writing... hardly we find people encouraging the creative writing.
Javed Sir: Thanks for your words, it means a lot for many of them in this field.

Selling the Story
Gone through one of the interesting article that indicated the concept of how a story can be sold to a producer or to a venture capitalist.
Here is the small snap shot of what it has told in my understandings

Aristotles way of Screen Writing
Aristotle a renowned greek screen writer in BC, has categorized and prioritized the way of film making. Though the times have changed, the way the screen writing is written still shines its way to success. Though telugu movies tend to move more into star kingdom, recent pictures that clicked at box office proved that aristotle's priority works in every generation.
Now, the basic question in thinking of a film is, what is the key for a film to be successful?? Many of them now call it script.. but aristotle defined it differently... reason, there can be a drama that can be done on extempore without any script and that can become a huge hit. So here is what Aristotle had to say about the priorities for beginning to write a script.
Priority 1
Decide on what is the plot? is the plot good enough to carry the film. No story is new under the sun, but the way it is told with fresh ideas and twists will make the story appealing.... ask yourself and a reliable person around on the feedback of the plot. If it has anything new to be told, then go ahead or just dont waste time in making the plot interesting.
Priority 2
The characters should be well drawn that are real and authentic. Write likes and dislikes of each character, and how the character is going to change/develop in due course of action.
Priority 3
What is the new/unique or compelling point that is driving the story, is there something hidden for the audience to get enthralled. Write the point that makes you different. Defend your point at every discussion
Priority 4
Short and Crisp dialogues for a good story form the backbone. Believe that in filmmaking actions speak louder that dialogues, so make sure you dont write every dialogue and prepare few scenes that depict what has to be told. Discuss with the director about his way of filmmaking and agree for few scenes with both the ideas blended together.
Priority 5 : Song Lyrics/Music/Background Score
Priority 6: Art Direction and Post Production
Priority 7: Sound Effects and special effects

how to write author backed roles?
I have been hearing for quite sometime that the hero gets an author backed role or some character got a very good role in a movie because it is an author backed role. Every role is written by an author, then was under a question saying what is this special author backed role.
Usually, the story or script is written and then characters are chosen based on their strengths, but for author backed roles, roles get fixed first, means casting is first decided. And based on the casting and the body language of the cast, author sits for writing the story and script.
The writer then would approach the director and creates a character fitness for that role, by having a screen test.
Now this is what i learnt for author backed roles, how as a writer we write some author backed roles, is the next question that popped up and what should we know in order to get started? here are few things to know from the cast/hero before starting an author backed role
- What is the qualification of the hero/cast?
- Who is the intendend audience for the film?
- What are the assumptions that as an author we can take for the hero/cast?
- What are his living habits and the places that he is comfortable staying in?
- What is the type of story that hero/cast is looking into? If there is nothing in particular suggesting few roles would be an added advantage.
- What are the parallel comparisons that can be drawn, for that story/script?
- finally a conculsion from the author is important, that says what is the role that he is looking for that particular character/cast/hero, along with his acceptance for that particular role.
Once the roles get fixed, based on the vicinity of those roles, story gets weaved around to form a better synopsis.
Here are few examples for author backed movies : Superman; Spider man, bond movies and many more
In tollywood - Stalin, Naani, Aparichithudu that i can think of.

Creativity gets a beating
sometimes, so many things start occuring to mind when we sit to write a story or script, its nothing new i guess for many script writers who already walked and smelt the roses. Sometimes its good to have many ideas, but film or media should be a focussed segment. So the advice that i got from some of the writers was not to experiment too many ideas in a single story, if the subject you are writing is related to some social problem, just focus on a single social problem, rather than telling all the social problems available on the earth.
Probably at the time of writing you might feel that what do we write or say for 3 hours on a single problem, but thats what is story or screen writing is all about. The focussed strategy as it works in any other field is applicable to the entertainment industry as well.
The best topic to chose to start with should be a topic which you are passionate about. Do not try subjects where you have not experienced or seen any characters around you with that capability. Example: A person staying in US should not start writing about the farming in india, he should actually get to the ground in order to understand the real scenes that happen in the farmers house and their vicinity.
Though this is a very basic thing, once we start thinking on these lines creativity takes a serious beating, and process of getting the ideas get streamlined and in due course will help you in coming out with more number of stories and scripts.

My interaction with Anish
I caught up with Anish, who directed Avakai Biryani in the Coffee day at Banjara hills.
I was late by 20 mins... i was little disappointed due to my late entry. Neverthless we started on a subject that was little bit of a thriller and romantic comedy... There was such a high level of disturbance in the shop.. i had to shout .. the narration was in bits and pieces though there was a script written, i was hardly able to explain anything to him. Story was not so appealing to him, his comments was its not so captivating...
Then I have started on different subject which is a mixture of Sivaji and Guru, as i usually tell it, but the treatment is different.
Initial comment when hearing about the story line was the story line is very noble.
When i started narrating it was so disastrous that anish commented saying he tried showing some social elements in Avakai biryani and it did not worked. His next comment was Who will come to the theatre and like to listen to the lecture. Yes no body will come to the theatre to listen to a lecture, probably i was narrating it like a lecture i dont know. But my feel was, only those scenes like the panchayat scene in Avakai biryani clicked in the movie rather than head aching love story... where chemistry never worked. I thought of telling the same, but because of his seniority i just remained silent. There is this pre-defined notion i was able to see in him that complex stories are not understood by the audience. Stories should be simple like godavari and anand.
He only had the time to listen to the narration in parts in a busy environment.
When a story writer gives a complex subject with 3 stages defined to a director along with the scene sequence, it basically depends on the directors calibre and editors skill sets to visualize it in an interesting way. This was a contradiction at the end of the discussion where i was told it is not visually appealing. I was not in a position to visualize anything there apart from some coffee and sandwitches in the half an hour time given to me.
Here are my learnings after the interaction which might be useful for other script writers starting their journey

- Before starting the script narration find out how much time can the listener spare - if it is less than 30 mins dont talk anything about the script.
- Ask what type of subject is he ready to listen, love story, action drama or what ever it is ask the listener about his interests.
- Story narration can be ok in busy hang outs but script narration should be only in a calm location with atleast an hour and half to spare
- Know more about the experiences of the directors and after every scene take the inputs from the listener, so that you are sure that he understands the things and you are on the same frequency.

Indian Vs Australian
Why all of a sudden there is a backlash on the indian youth, all across the globe. Is it something that was hidden in the hearts that is coming to the light during the recession. I thought of writing down the dialogue version if Australian and Indian sit in a debate
Australian: why do I have to sacrifice my job to an indian, when my country is having unemployment, why cant you go back to your country and search for jobs.
Indian: I paid the fee, I came to learn with authorized visa regulations, because i invested my time and money here, i am eligible to apply for the job under your government regulations.
Australian: We also paid the fee, because you work for less money, you are getting the job
Indian: we are working for our existence and your government approved it
Australian: Why dont you go back to India and search for a job?
Indian: I am in a free world i can live and breathe anywhere i want..
dragging this is waste of time, i thought can these 2 people solve this debate...? no, its the government of both the countries that should debate on these topics. India is not a consumer, so we are not able to increase the domestic market. We dont have infrastructure as we have in Australia, US or UK.
So, when indian government creates ample job oppurtunities and infrastructure support for youth in India, then abviously no body want to stay away from the mother land and would like to sit in a debate like this.

Here is one of the comment that i got for the topic writers on 9th planet..!
hello pradeep im rohit from warangal studying b.tech 3rd year in KITS. whats wrong in taking real incidents as stories? even Ram gopal varma does the same thing...!preparing "rakta charitra"we never know it may help to prevent such incidents may not repeat...it happens with many guys for some moment in that moment only every thing happens..! nobody knows what excactly happend with boy...? but he'l become villian....! every body have their own view..! how can u criticize others if ur not yet succeeded as writer..? jealous? u can not write about others in ur blog publicly..! i realy liked that subject..which mentioned in ur blog..though is is not complete..!

Hi Rohit, thanks for taking time in writing back to me, if you read the post again, i wrote that movies had to be made on the real life incidents and i am also not against fantasy or thriller movies... the thing i wrote is there is lot more to the story which is called as treatment, script is a treatment, you cannot call the theme or a story where you write there is a happy man, you also have to say why he is happy and write the emotions of why you think he is happy, a person can be happy for n number of reasons, in your home work you need to prepare for the answers, you should not come and say a happy person fell in love.So never mind budding writers are always on the brighter side of the life.. keep writing and keep reading... we never know when you will get a chance. as far as i am concerned you are true that i did not got a chance, but at the same time i talk to myself saying that i am not writing for chances, i am writing it for myself and not for anybody else.

16th all Congress Day
The long wait finally ended in all favouring Congress, Though no body expected it to be such a thumping majority.. it was all done by the voters...The votes against congress are divided by BJP, TDP, PRP, TRS, Lok Satta and CPI(M)
Now small parties understand that, its not the parties that have to be formed, but they have to gain confidence in the public. Dont cry on the split over milk, we are now to face the same government for the next 5 years.
We hope atleast the new congress leaders who are elected, do not end up selling the lands, but focus on completing the pending projects.
I am little happy that Jayaprakash Narayan, Chiru and Jaya sudha won the elections. We need some softspoken people to bring some prestige to the politicians. We now have to see what will be the change that the boasted leaders like Chiru and JP would get to the state. Even though they do not have power, we should assume that they speak out their mind in the assembly so that we have some body talking about the public.
Jai hoo Congress...! all the very best for your next term of ruling.

Laksha Gala Archana
It was one of the scintillating nights... with lights and people all over.. it was well organised and good to see and hear... 160000 in the heart of city singing the lords name... what a way to attend the glorious divine....
Though divine glamour clearly outdated the filmy glamour on stage.. managalampalli garu.. kavitha krishna murthy, anand sir clearly stole the show from raghavendra rao and nagarjuna... though there is no comparison... it was a visual treat to divine form of art... Though bharavi was in his own saffron attire spoke few words.. on the whole it was a great place and time to be there.

Writers on 9th planet
Hi,
I was coming across few of the writers on the 9th planet. I agree that writers have to think differently and confidently. but writing a story with all questions and going for registration by investing 8000 rupees.. oops.. i m afraid... i thought it was ok for a moment... but writing like "A happy man think what he can do to get his love.. he runs behind the lover... he is sincere in his love.. he is passionate.. he proposes the girl she rejects.. think why she rejects.. why a boy is forced to throw acid.. etc etc., "
taking a subject like this calling it as a theme and running pillar post to make a film.. registering it .. and finding it as a greatest script... of course for the writer it is supposed to be... but being a writer and staying on the 9th planet with the real time story... no i forgot its theme... is confusing and at the same time... apologetic...
All the best for the upcoming writers, let us be realistic and not try to push the cinema into some of the enigmatic areas. If we select a subject of fantasy it is fine.. making real life story into what is called pieces of clothes and getting everything to stitch.. is a writers job.. and well accepted... but you cannot call yourself a writer by bringing all the cut pieces with questions and calling it as a story or theme....
i better mind my business rather than poaching into others... well' probably i was just... out of my mind for some time i guess....
